I wanted to get support from the Orakzai tribe. At that time the path of negotiations between me and the Orakzais was in the hands of the British. Through Haji Mohammad Akbar Khan I entered into negotiations with the British Government. But the latter did not agree. They adduced their neutrality as their excuse and pointed out that to allow the Orakzais to go over to me would be a contravention of their declara- tion of neutrality and the British wrote to me a letter to this effect, which letter to this day is with me.
