Directions for taking the range of a Stationary object with a 25 yard base. 15.—Observer No. 2's duties:— (a) No. 2 looks through his instrument and obtains coincidence between the distant object and the ivory strip at No. 1's instrument by advancing or retiring, i.e., by movements forwards and backwards. (b) If the ivory strip appears to be to the left of the distant object, No. 2 will advance; if to the right, he will retire. (c) Having nearly got the coincidence between the distant object and No. 1's ivory strip, No. 2 will advance his left foot (Vide Fig. IV) and complete exact coincidence by a slight movement, backward or forward, of his body—always taking care not to move his feet. (d) When he obtains exact coincidence he will call "on." 16.—Observer No. 1's duties:— (a) No. 1 facing the distant object, advances his right foot well forward and stands as rigidly as possible (Vide Fig III) keeping the cord between himself and observer No. 2 slightly stretched. (b) Then by working through his instrument, No. 1 obtains coincidence by turning the drum D.
