"THE MEKOMETER"
OR
DISTANCE FINDER.
1.—The Mekometer is an instrument invented by Col. Watkins of England for the use of the British Army and for the purpose of finding out the distance of a given object.
2.—The complete Mekometer "apparatus" consists of two instruments, called "the right Mekometer" and "the left Mekometer." Each of these two Mekometers or instruments is accommodated in a leather case and comprises a small telescope, a handle, and a reel with two pieces of cords each 12½ yards in length.
NOTE:—These cords are specially constructed to be pliable, inextensible and water-proof, and are provided with a spring catch at each end, one for hooking on to the instrument and one for fastening the two ends of the cords together.
3.—To work the abovementioned instruments, two persons are required, called the observers.
4.—Each of these two observers has to possess an instrument:—the pair being termed "the right" and "the left" Mekometers in order to distinguish the one from the other.
5.—"The right" and "the left" Mekometers are also called "No. 1" and "No. 2" Mekometers respectively, and are carried and worked by observers who are also termed "No. 1" and "No. 2" observers—regard being had to the No. of the Mekometer carried and used by the observers who have to fix their position according as "the right," or "the left," Mekometer is used by each.
6.—The Mekometer can calculate the range of both the stationary and the moving objects.
7.—For the purpose of working these instruments, the observers have to walk a distance in front carrying the apparatus with them.
