Meanwhile, a second Turkish army, under the command of Ahmad Pasha, had reached within a few miles of Isfahan, the Persian capital. At this time a partition treaty regarding the north-western provinces of Persia was concluded between its two neighbours—the Porte and the Czar. The boundaries of the Russian provinces in Persia were fixed by a line, which gave that State the command of all the Persian provinces bordering the Caspian Sea, from the country of the Turkomans to the conflux of the rivers Kars and Araxes. The possessions of Turkey were defined by a line, which commenced from the latter point and stretching to within three miles of Ardabil, went from Tabriz to Hamadan, and from thence to Kirmanshah. These provinces were mutually guaranteed to each other by the contracting parties, and it was stipulated that, if Prince Tahmasap agreed to the terms, he would receive such aid as to enable him to re-establish his authority over the remaining provinces of Persia, and if he refused his assent, they determined to seize the whole of
