{"book":"adl0981","page":74,"text":"The old caravan route over the Salang Pass which will soon be replaced by the new Salang Highway,\nincorporating a tunnel 2½ kilometres long\n\nsigned with I.C.A. on June 30th, 1958.\nThe survey and design work on this\nproject was given to an American\ncompany early in 1959, while aerial\nphotography of the highway was\ncarried out in June and finished in July.\nIt is estimated that constructional work on\nthis road will start in the autumn of this\nyear.\n\nAirports\n\nThe construction of airports at Bagram\nand Kabul, two of the country's most\nimportant construction projects, has been\na further responsibility of the Ministry\nof Public Works. Work on the construc\ntion of the Bagram Airport began in\nFebruary, 1958, and by now 90 per cent\nof the concreting work and 60 per cent\nof the buildings have been finished. The\nremaining work will be completed as\nquickly as possible. The runways have a\n\nlength of 3,000 metres and a width of\n54.4 metres, while the total area of the\nairport is approximately 63,200 square\nmetres. Runway work finished on the\n7th June, 1959, 32,000 cubic metres\nhaving been the amount of concreting\nmaterial used. Most of the hangars will\nbe finished in August of this year.
