Geological and Meteorological Survey\n\nThe geological survey of Afghanistan,\nstarted last year, was strengthened this\nyear with the help of the West German\ntechnicians and equipment placed at our\ndisposal as a result of a technical\nassistance agreement with the West\nGerman Federal Republic.\n\nA special radio-activity survey is being\ncarried out with the co-operation of a\nFrench team. Also a study is being made\nof the river deposits to ascertain the\npresence and extent of heavy minerals,\nwith the co-operation of a French\ntechnical assistance team.\n\n3. Topography and Aerial Survey\n\nThe American Fairchild Co., with\nwhom the Government have an agree-\nment for securing of complete topo-\ngraphical data on Afghanistan, has now\nundertaken to do the following work by\n1962, in accordance with an addendum\nto the agreement brought about by the\nI.C.A.\n\nAerial photography on the scale of\n1/30,000, 1/60,000 of a major part of the\ncountry and photo-mosaic of 1/50,000 and\n\n1/100,000 and topographical maps of\n1/50,000, 1/100,000 and 1/250,000.\n\nFurther, the work of photography and\nground control surveys has continued in\naccordance with the previous plan and\nagreements with the U.S.S.R. Techno-\nExport and the American Fairchild Co.\nA large area has been photographed on\nscales of 1/30,000 and 1/60,000. Arrange-\nments have been made for the estab-\nlishment of modern archives for the\nsafe-keeping of aerial and topographic\nmaps. Additional photographic equip-\nment has been imported from West\nGermany.\n\n4. Petroleum\n\nIn accordance with an agreement con-\ncluded with the U.S.S.R. Techno-Export\norganisation, a survey is under way in\nthe search for petroleum in a large area\nof northern Afghanistan.
