{"book":"adl0981","page":39,"text":"THE KABUL\nMUSEUM\n\nAs the Kabul Museum, representing\nthe Afghan nation's culture and\ncivilisation for many thousands of years,\nwas in need of drastic reorganisation,\nwork started on it in the beginning of the\nThird Year of the Plan. This included\nthe installation of Plexiglass display\ncabinets and air conditioning units in the\nvarious galleries. Two galleries, one of\nthe ancient relics of Bagram and the other\nof Islamic art, were reorganised in such a\nway as to make them most attractive and\nprominent. A new gallery, that of pre-\nhistoric Afghanistan, was opened: it was\ngiven the name of the Mundigak Gallery\nand in it were arranged discoveries be-\nlonging to some five thousand years.\nThe findings of Fundukistan were moved\nto a better room and the sculpture works\nof Afghanistan's very last Buddhist period\nwere put on display.\n\nThe Shuturak Room\nIn this room examples of Graeco-\nBuddhist sculpture have been displayed,\nas well as slabs of marble. Stone tablets\nfound in various parts of the country, and\nuntil recently placed in corridors in the\nMuseum, have been removed to this room\nand mounted in the walls with the\nappropriate description beneath each one.\nIn the newly completed depot with its\nspecially designed cabinets ancient relics\nfrom Bagram, ivory sculptures, glassware\nbelonging to the Alexandrian period,\nmetalware, plasterwork and earthenware\nhave been stored.\n\nThe photographic Section\nA new photographic section has been\nopened at the museum and contains\ncameras and enlargers for the preparation\nof necessary photographs for the museum\nas well as for outside organisations.\n\nPhotographic work has also been com-\npleted on the relics of Nuristan, the\nsculptures of Gandahara and the dis-\ncoveries of Fundukistan.
