Radio\nprogrammes were arranged once a week\nto keep the farmers all over the country\ninformed about up-to-date methods of\nfarming and writers were encouraged to\nimprove their scripts by the offer of three\ndifferent prizes.\nTHE DEPARTMENT OF SOIL AND WATER\nThis department is chiefly concerned\nwith the constant supply of water and the\nconservation of soil. During the fourth\nyear of the Plan the Department repaired\nand improved the Ajmir Canal in\nKataghan Province to keep irrigation\nwater flowing for the sugarbeet fields in\nBaghlan and other adjoining areas in\nco-operation with the F.A.O. experts.\nThe Department also repaired and\nimproved the Archi Canal which irrigates\nthousands of acres of fertile land in\nKataghan and surveyed the area for the\nbuilding of another canal in Alchin which\nwould irrigate 7,000 additional acres by\nmeans of a pumping station. Efforts\nhave been made to re-dig the old canals\ndestroyed in Nangarhar Province for the\npurpose of irrigating vast areas of fallow\nland. Hundreds of small pumping\nstations are to be distributed soon among\nfarmers in Katawaz and Ghazni where\nthe scarcity of water is acutely felt and\nirrigation water has to be obtained from\ndeep wells.\nThe Department has also made con\nsiderable progress in connection with the\nanalysis of various samples of soil from\nvarious parts of the country.
