On their way to\nthat city, they attacked and stormed the fortress\nof Kunjpura, sixty miles north of Delhi, putting\nto sword the entire garrison, numbering no less\nthan 10,000 men. This wholesale massacre took\nplace almost in sight of the Afghan army,\nencamped on the other side of the river. Once\nmore the flooded Jamna and the violence of the\nperiodical rains stood in the way of rendering any\nhelp to the besieged. Ahmad Shah concluded\nthat further delay was suicidal ; something must\nbe done at once.\n\nWith this intention he broke up his canton-\nment and ordered his men to cross the river\nagainst all odds. On reaching the Jamna, he\nfound it swollen and in full flood. He proceeded\nalong it to find a ford. But he could see none.\nHe resolved to cross it at all cost. The disgrace\nmust be wiped out.
