It was a great seat of culture in the pre-Islamic\ndays, and had some flourishing towns (such as Alexandria ad\nCaucasum, Houpian, Cartana, Cadrusi, and Capisia). The\nwhole plain, especially that of the Bagram (old Capisene) is litter-\ned with the ruins of these ancient seats of culture.\n\nAnother of the better known of the many populous valleys\nin this direction is called Panjsher (Five Lions), which lies beyond\nthe pale of Koh Daman and Kohistan. A zigzag motor road\nnow leads from Gul Bahar to this happy valley.
